Artist Statement

I am Palestinian and I wanted to create a concentration that shows the effects of war on a culture. I created a series of sculptures that explore traditional objects, the impact of violence on a culture and finally how the region will recover from the war. I have used a series of second materials in some of my pieces to add to the visual impact and overall message. Some of these second materials are projection, wood, and wire.

In the beginning I wanted to use projection on most to all of my pieces. Then I realized that the detail of the artwork would be shadowed and unseen. I started my concentration by expressing the culture. You will see a middle eastern inspired drum which has real leather tied on to the top and is fully functional . In this piece I used line and glazed it a different color for style and design. My next piece is an abstract arabian lantern . I used repetition with the crescent and a star to emphasise the symbol of islam. My second material for this piece is a candle which represents the on coming of war and essentially the “calm before the storm.” The wall piece is my representation of the five pillars of islam. In this piece I worked with dimensions and either carved down or attached clay. Metal wire was the second material used to represent the seclusion of the religion. The mushroom cloud resembles the outbreak of war. I really wanted to work on the texture of the cloud and make it look like it had movement so I carved the texture and glazed it to add to the realism. My final piece is an olive branch. I carved line and created an uneven colome shape to give off the essence of a realistic branch, and used real branches and olives to bring the piece to life. The olive branch resembled the culture, peace, and rebirth.
